What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic, usually just called Botox, is an injectable cosmetic treatment that is FDA-approved to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, especially crow’s feet and frown lines. Botox is manufactured by Allergan, a trusted medical aesthetics brand within the AbbVie medical company.
While it is most popular as a wrinkle reducing treatment, Botox is also used as a treatment for several medical conditions, including blepharospasm, cervical dystonia (neck spasms), chronic migraines, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
How Does Botox Work?
The active ingredient in Botox is a neurotoxin called onabotulinumtoxina, commonly known as botulinum toxin type a or botulinum toxin. We know that is a mouthful and may even sound a little scary, but remember that Botox has been a safe and popular cosmetic treatment for more than 20 years. Botox and other botulinum toxin products such as Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin are the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments in the U.S., with upwards of 5 million treatments each year.
So how exactly does Botox work? Wrinkles are caused, in part, by repetitive movement of the face when you laugh, smile, or frown. Botox temporarily stops the underlying facial muscles from contracting, which relaxes the wrinkles and helps prevent new lines from forming.
The preventative effects are the reason more and more patients are scheduling Botox treatments in their 20’s. While Botox can provide benefits for patients in their 40’s, 50’s and beyond, the earlier you treat lines and wrinkles, the longer you can enjoy smooth, youthful skin.
Botox for Hyperhidrosis
Botox, or Botulinum toxin, treats hyperhidrosis by blocking the nerve signals that trigger Trusted Source Botulinum toxin A for axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) New England Journal of Medicine Go to Source sweat production . Injected directly into areas prone to excessive sweating, such as the underarms, palms, soles of the feet, or forehead, Botox inhibits the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger responsible for activating sweat glands. This significantly reduces perspiration in the treated areas. The effects typically last 6 to 12 months, after which treatment can be repeated. Botox injections for hyperhidrosis is generally safe with minimal side effects, such as mild pain or bruising at the injection site and, rarely, Trusted Source Botox for Excessive Sweating BCM Go to Source temporary muscle weakness.

Botox Alternatives
While botox has the best name recognition, there are several other wrinkle-reducing injectables available. These alternative neuromodulators can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis. While they all work in a similar way, reducing wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles, each of these products has its own unique formula. Some patients have learned that one particular product works best for them, but don’t worry if you aren’t sure which is right for you. Our experienced Nurse Injector will discuss your options with you and choose the one that is best for your needs and goals.
Dysport
At True Blue Aesthetics, we also offer Dysport, which works in a similar way to Botox and has the same great benefits. Dysport is designed to reduce the appearance of glabellar lines, which are the vertical frown lines that appear between the eyebrows. One key difference between Botox and Dysport is that Dysport offers quicker results—with visible wrinkle reduction in just two days, while the full results of Botox sometimes take up to a week to appear.
Jeuveau
Jeuveau is the newest type of neurotransmitter, and what sets it apart from Botox is that it uses a different form of purified botulinum toxin called prabotulinumtoxinA. Unlike Botox, which is FDA approved for several medical uses, Jeuveau is only intended for cosmetic use. Like Dysport, this aesthetic formula is designed to treat glabellar lines. Jeuveau gives the same great results and is offered at a lower price than other brands.
